Local Administrative Privileges Policy
Last Updated about a month ago

What are administrative privileges?

Administrative privileges (also called "Local Admin access") allow you to install software, change system settings, and perform other advanced computer functions that regular users cannot do.

Who gets administrative privileges?

Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) Staff

ORIS IT staff receive administrative privileges only for the computers and systems they need to manage as part of their job responsibilities.

All Other ERIK Staff

Most staff members do not receive administrative privileges unless they are specifically needed to complete your work duties.

How to request administrative privileges

If you need Local Admin access for your job:

  1. Talk to your supervisor first - Make sure administrative access is truly necessary for your role
  2. Have your supervisor submit the request - Your supervisor must go to go.osu.edu/employeeaccess and submit the request through the Employee Access system
  3. Wait for approval - Requests will be reviewed and approved based on job requirements

Important things to know

Annual reviews: Every year, you and your supervisor will review whether you still need administrative privileges. If they're no longer necessary, they will be removed.

Consequences of misuse: If you have administrative privileges and experience repeated problems with unauthorized software, viruses, or malware, your administrator access will be removed.

Questions?

Contact your supervisor or the IT help desk if you have questions about administrative privileges or the request process.
