Local Administrative Privileges Policy

Default Administrative Privilege Assignments

Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) staff
Administrative privileges are granted within the scope of the staff members’ area of responsibility. Information systems staff members are granted administrative privileges only on those assets necessary for them to accomplish assigned job duties.

All other staff
No administrative privileges are granted unless deemed necessary to complete job duties.

Request Process

Users request administrative privileges by having his or her supervisor contact the ORIS Help Desk at orhelpdesk@osu.edu with answers to these two questions:

  1.      What is the name of the computer for which you are requesting administrative privileges for your employee?
  2.      How will gaining administrative privileges on this computer assist your employee in performing his or her assigned job duties?

Role Duration

Due to the evolving nature of technology and the changing roles of users at the university all local administrative accounts will be reviewed on an annual basis with an employee’s supervisor. If the administrative role is no longer deemed necessary, the permissions will be revoked.  Further, if a user with local administrative privileges has unauthorized programs or regular virus/malware issues, administrator access will be removed.
